Planning for a Road Trip
I recently drove across the country and it was an amazing experience that I plan to repeat. There are going to be some changes in my plan the next time I do it. Here are my best tips for taking a road trip.
Take a look at air mattresses and consider taking one with you. Spending as much tie on the road as I have has taught me that you can never be sure where you are going to be sleeping each night. That’s why I used to keep two tents and at least one, sometimes two air mattresses in my trunk. While the tents are fine you need to make sure to be careful that the air mattresses don’t freeze as that will break down the plastic and rubber and make them useless. You may want to look into self-inflating sleeping mats made for camping instead. When I ditched the air mattresses those are what I started to keep in my trunk.
Pack light. You are going to want to pack the essentials for survival and not much else. I don’t mean literal “survival” but you need to start with the essentials. Keep some water in your car and a couple snacks to tide you over. After you have the basics all set and figured out, you can think about other items that you want to take with you.
Having an extra key to go in your wallet is always a good idea even if you aren’t travelling. You don’t want to get locked out of your car 10 miles from the nearest house with a working phone.
Keep a power inverter in your car to make sure that your GPS and phone stay charged. You don’t want to find yourself stranded with no way to find your way to your next destination.
